National Open Art competition

Woken by tulips

Wow! I have been shortlisted for NOA 2017. The second round is later but in the meantime there is the World Art Vote. You can vote for my picture from here.

If you would like to see other shortlisted work, go to this page. You can of course vote for several artists… but please do vote for me!

If I have asked you already elsewhere, sorry!

Not waving

A weird sea picture with references to Gauguin and Stevie Smith
Not waving

I love this gloomy piece which evolved under my eyes. My visual memory was jerked by the beginnings of the hunched up figure and I found the image I recalled in a book about Gauguin (hero!) with a photo of a Peruvian mummy. I have always loved the poem by Stevie Smith  – hence the title.

Maybe all the horrifying stories of drownings in the Mediterranean influenced me as well. We can never know all the subconscious themes.

Image 10×8 inches (25.5×20 cm).

Y is for Yellow is nearly finished…

yellowblogbutton150and for my last series in the year (the 3rd series) I have been working on aspects of Eve, the apple and the snake (or variations).

All images are 8×10 inches (20×25.5 cm) and are in mixed media.   They are not intended to illustrate the bible story accurately!

The lady ventriloquist

The lady ventriloquist

She holds her dummy close even while she isn’t speaking. An unlikely subject which appeared out of my collage. Image 10×8 inches (25×20 cm).

Face

An expressive portrait of a woman. Collage with drawing and pattern on black background.

A woman’s face. Her expression is sad, lost in her own thoughts maybe. An experimental collage which seems to be complete at this stage. I like it anyway!

Mixed media on paper, the image measures 8×10 inches (20×25.5 cm).

Sweet sugar dumpling

A leaping joyous fat lady
So I’m fat – I don’t care!

One of a recent series of figures outlined with heavy black. I love the way the bright colours look like traditional stained glass. I remember dancing to this song way back… Didn’t want to offend with the real title!

I’m too old for all this malarkey

I’m too old for all this malarkey

I feel for this lady! Mixed media on paper, image 8×10 inches (20×25.5 cm). Have a giggle!

Blue lady

1794 blue lady.bA portrait that grew from eyes that ‘appeared’ in a kind of swirling paint mix. Image 8×10 inches (20×25.5 cm), mixed media on paper. Reproductions for sale in my print on demand shop.

Lady in orange

head of woman with orange dress on blue backgroundA new addition to my monoprint portraits. This woman was on a multi-coloured collaged background but that had been painted out so the orange is set starkly against the light blue. Mixed media work with collage. Image size about 8×10 inches (20×25.5 cm).

Turkish bath

A nude woman has a vaguely oriental background!

Drawing after a sculpture by Frank Dobson. Collage of decorated papers including the monoprint of the drawing – it might be inside a tiled Turkish bath. Image 8×10 inches (20×25.5 cm).

Venetian blinds

Sun through the blinds

Is she an artist’s model? Or just a woman enjoying the warmth falling on her through the blinds which provide seclusion?

A mixed media piece with collage, contour drawing and distortion!

Image 8×10 inches (20×25.5 cm).

Last post of the year – wish it was warm enough to sit around in the nude!

Happy New Year.
